Light, from the first word spoken to a city with no lamp

The first recorded sentence God speaks is about light, and He speaks it before there is anything to shine on.

Three words in Hebrew. And notice what is not there: no sun. The sun and moon are not made until the fourth day, which has generated centuries of discussion and one unavoidable observation — light in Scripture is not first a property of a star.

It is the first thing God says, and it is the first thing He calls good.

Then the thread runs through the whole Book with two functions: light is what you see by, and light is what you are seen by.

A pillar of fire goes ahead of a nation at night for forty years. A lampstand burns continually in the tabernacle, tended morning and evening. A psalmist says the LORD is his light and salvation, whom shall he fear.

And a prophet, writing about a region that had been overrun and humiliated, says something that gets quoted every December.

Not light came to them. They have seen it. The change is in what the people can now see.

Said in the temple courts during the Feast of Tabernacles, when enormous lampstands were lit in the Court of the Women and the light could be seen across the city. He said it standing in the middle of the illumination.

And this is where the light thread and the word thread meet, because Psalm 119:105 called the Word a lamp — a small clay lamp, a few feet of light, which this volume studied in Week Three.

Both are true and the scale is different. The Word is the lamp in your hand for the next step. Christ is the light of the world.

The thread ends by making the lamp unnecessary.

No sun, no moon, no lamp — and the city needs none, because the glory of God gives it light and the Lamb is its lamp.

The thread also carries a moral sense that is easy to separate out but never is in Scripture. John says God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all, and that walking in the light is what makes fellowship possible. Light is what you see by, what you are seen by, and what you are asked to live in.

It began with light before there was a sun. It ends with light after there is no more need of one. And in between, a man is given a small clay lamp and told it is enough to see the next step by.

2 Corinthians 4:6 ties the two ends of the thread in one sentence: God, who said Let light shine out of darkness, made His light shine in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Christ. Paul quotes Genesis 1 and applies it to conversion.

Isaiah 49:6 gives the missionary turn — it is too small a thing for you to be My servant to restore Israel; I will make you a light for the Gentiles. Simeon quotes it over an infant, and Paul and Barnabas quote it in Acts 13 as their commission.

Matthew 5:14–16 hands the title on: you are the light of the world, a city on a hill. The one place Jesus shares the title, He shares it with ordinary disciples and immediately makes it about visible works.

John 3:19–20 gives the darker half: this is the verdict, that light has come into the world, but men loved darkness because their deeds were evil; everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into it, for fear his deeds will be exposed. The thread includes people avoiding it.
